In the first days of October, the Bambino Gesù Pediatric Hospital organized “Shaping the future of pediatrics”, a meeting on innovation in pediatrics. Among the speakers, Tony Young discusses the solutions that the NHS has developed to improve the performance of traditional health care at a lower cost by exploiting artificial intelligence and digital technologies. Todd Ponsky, pediatrician at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, and speaker at 4words 2020, shows how academic medicine and scientific publishing have been disrupted by digital transformation in recent years. Innovative solutions, however, can also be adopted by individual hospitals: John Brownstein recounts the experience of Boston Children’s Hospital, which is innovating communications with digital voice technologies, while Pekka Lahdenne directed a Helsinki hospital designed by pediatricians, patients and other professionals starting from an extraordinary crowdfunding campaign. Among Italians, Stefano Vella discusses the need to consider innovation as a means of promoting equity in healthcare.
